He came alone and a stranger into that broad Texas land of big skies and men to match. And when they answered him in the language of violence, he listened and understood that in this country, one man's life meant another man's death. Which man would he be? This was filmed in 1958, directed by William Wyler and starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker and Charlton Heston.

SLAVES OF SLEEP, Hubbard, L. Ron
6 Hubbard, L. Ron SLAVES OF SLEEP
Chicago Shasta Publishers 1948 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Very Good- 8vo Hannes Bok;
206 pp. followed by a brief biography of the author. Beige cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; headband; wraparound dustjacket art by Hannes Bok. Edge and corner wear on the dustjacket with a short tear on the rear panel; price intact; no interior markings. Prior to inventing Dianetics and inspiring The Church of Scientology, when L. Ron Hubbard was first writing science fiction, he sat in a bar with fellow science fiction writer, A. E. van Vogt, and said, "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man wanted to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion." He certainly proved that statement to be true. Scientologists everywhere deny that Hubbard ever said any such thing, of course. Lloyd Eshbach was another one of the authors to whom L. Ron Hubbard expressed his desire for money. In 1949, he told Eshbach, "I'd like to start a religion. That's where the money is."

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, Lee, Harper (introduction by Albert French)

270 pp. Orange cloth decorated with gilt and black on the panels and spine; burnt orange endpapers; headband; presented in a slipcase. Illustrated with line drawings by Aafke Brouwer. Very light rubbing on the slipcase; even less rubbing on the book. Believe it or not, the school board in Biloxi, Mississippi has decided they don't like the stand against racism and the anti-racism tone in To Kill a Mockingbird so they have removed it from the school cirriculum. So far, though, it is still available in libraries. Go figure.

SELECTED LETTERS II 1925 - 1929, Lovecraft, H. P.
8 Lovecraft, H. P. SELECTED LETTERS II 1925 - 1929
Sauk City, Wisconsin Arkham House 1968 Second Printing Hardcover Very Good+ Very Good+ 8vo Virgil Finlay;
(xxiv) 359 pp. Black boards lettered in gilt on the spine; gray endpapers; headband. Illustrated with black and white photographs; back cover portrait of Lovecraft by Virgil Finlay. Light rubbing around the edges; no interior markings. Lovecraft was a prolific letter writer and this is a huge collection of his letters - the very last page of the book mentions that this is a second printing of the first edition; the copyright page leads one to believe that this is a first. The recipients are far too numerous to list but some of the well-known ones are: Frank Belknap Long; Clark Ashton Smith; August Derleth; Donald Wandrei; Zelia Brown Bishop; Farnsworth Wright; Vincent Starrett; and many, many others. Howard Phillip Lovecraft died in 1937, known only in the pulp magazines, primarily Weird Tales. But his work lived on, promoted, at first, by assorted Weird Tales fans, along with the members of the Lovecraft Circle: Robert E. Howard; Clark Ashton Smith; Robert Bloch; Frank Belknap Long; Henry Kuttner; Fritz Leiber; and August Derleth, who founded Arkham House Publishers, in partnership with Donald Wandrei. Initially, Arkham's purpose was to preserve Lovecraft's work, beginning with The Outsider and Others, shortly after Lovecraft's death. It is fair to say that every single horror writer since Lovecraft has been influenced by his work, either directly, by reading him, or indirectly, by reading someone who read him.

New York Simon and Schuster 1950 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Very Good Author's First Book 8vo K. Chester; Edd Cartier;
276 pp. This was the first book published under the pen name Lewis Padgett. Red boards lettered in silver on the front panel and spine; dustjacket by Edd Cartier and K. Chester. Moore continued to write for awhile after he was gone, she virtually abandoned the genre. Henry was a member of the Lovecraft Circle and wrote some truly terrifying horror stuff for Weird Tales. And Catherine was voted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1998. Mimsy Were the Borogoves was filmed in 2007 as The Last Mimzy, directed by Robert Shaye and starring Chris O'Neil, Rhiannon Leigh Wryn, Joely Richardson, Timothy Hutton, Kathryn Hahn, Michael Clarke Duncan, and many others. The Twonky was filmed in 1953, directed by Arch Obeler and starring Hans Conried, Gloria Blondell, Janet Warren and more. Also, What You Need was shot as an episdoe of The Twilight Zone in 1959, starring Steve Cochran, Ernest Truex, Read Morgan, Arlene Martel and others.

A CLASSIC CASE OF MURDER - An Inspector Cross Mystery Jigsaw Puzzle Thriller, Slesar, Henry
20 Slesar, Henry A CLASSIC CASE OF MURDER - An Inspector Cross Mystery Jigsaw Puzzle Thriller
Bloomfield, Connecticut bePuzzled 1982 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine Puzzle 4to
This is, in fact, a jigsaw puzzle game, not a book. You solve an original whodunit by finding clues in both a mystery story and a jigsaw puzzle. First, you read Henry Slesar's story. Next, you assemble the puzzle to reveal the rest of the clues. Still in the original plastic wrap with a bit of wear around the edges and corners of the box. Never opened... She never knew what hit her. She was within the safety of her home, awaiting the arrival of her husband. She was ready to celebrate the purchase of the newest addition to his collection of classic cars, a rare 1936 Cord. But he was late, very late, and she passed the time by writing letters to her friends. Wanting to catch the morning post, she walked to the mailbox. Suddenly, there was the roar of a powerful V-8 engine and in one terrible tick of time, her rich and happy world came to an end... The box contains: A Classic Case of Murder, an original shot mystery story and the solution written in mirror type. A 23" by 29" full colour, 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle and a resealable puzzle pouch. Also, the puzzle image is different from the box cover. As for Henry Slesar, he passed away in 2002 after writing hundreds of short stories, a few novels, and more scripts for Alfred Hitchcock than any other writer.
