Ron Hubbard was first writing science fiction, he sat in a bar with fellow science fiction writer, A. E. van Vogt, and said, "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man wanted to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion." He certainly proved that statement to be true. Scientologists everywhere deny that Hubbard ever said any such thing, of course. Lloyd Eshbach was another one of the authors to whom L. Ron Hubbard expressed his desire for money. In 1949, he told Eshbach, "I'd like to start a religion. That's where the money is."
